Should I wait and see if the existing DDC controls come out completely wireless?

  • My opinion, in the near future the DDC controls will be wireless. Because of the rising cost of labor and inconvenience to the existing facility I feel strongly that wireless will be incorporated more and more into the buildings automation systems.  Even if the DDC controls are wireless they are still going to have to deal with the high labor and material costs to replace the existing pneumatic control system.
  • DDC control actuators require a minimum of 24V of electrical power to run the dampers and valves associated with most systems.  Adding a transformer requires high voltage primary connections and then cabling and connections to accommodate the actuators.
  • Labor to mount the actuators and assuring that they close off and open up also adds to the DDC controls costs.
  • While wireless DDC controls will reduce the communications cabling but you still have to have the power cabling so you're not really saving very much by going wireless. The room sensor to the ceiling DDC control and some communication wiring doesn't represent enough savings to warrant installing all this complicated DDC controls over our new simple on off auto switching device.
  • Diagnostics and repair costs of DDC controls are very high and quite often rely on the seldom seen control guru
